Cutting-Edge Themes in Human Resource Management (HRM) & Human Resource Development (HRD)

Introduction

There are a number of ‘Cutting-edge Themes’ in Human Resource Management and Human Resource Development. These themes are important not just because of their topical existence but also as a result of their crucial importance to those areas of study that will provide practitioners with the knowledge and skills to enhance their contribution to organisational effectiveness (see e.g. Konrad and Deckop, 2001). Arming practitioners with the relevant competencies might make the difference between objective accomplishment and a greatly impaired process.

 

In 1998, Hoogendoorn identified the following four neglected themes in HRM:

1.      Combined HRM and Strategic Management

2.      Organisational pathology

3.      HRM in new starting ventures

4.      Deregulation and privatisation

Some of these themes have since then been addressed, others have received little attention. For example, while Kinnie, Purcell, Hutchinson, Terry, Collinson and Scarbrough  (1999); Li,l. h. and Siu, A. (2001), Lancaster and  Brierley (2001), Fumagalli (2001) and Miller (2000) among several others, have addressed the areas of privatisation and deregulation HRM in starting ventures has received little attention, empirically or conceptually. However, an area such as organisational pathology is beginning to attract some attention (see e.g. Crawford, 2002e).
