CHANGE MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY - MANAGEMENT OF ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE

 An important element of Organisational Development, change is inevitable in organizations, irrespective of whether it is reactive or planned. This is a necessary function if the process if ‘entropy` is to be reversed. It is of strategic importance that organizations anticipate the need for change and take the necessary steps to manage the situation before it is imposed on them (planned or controlled change management), rather than only to react to the change when the need arises (reactive change). While we stress the importance of proactive change management, it is accepted that all organisations will need to react to environmental demands that are forced upon them, at some stage in their life cycle. Whether reactive or proactive change management, it is important that the organisation is returned to a state of normality soon after the change process has been implemented. This is what I regard as ‘institutionalisation’. Unless this occurs, real and lasting change has not taken place.

  HRODC Postgraduate Training Institute has the necessary expertise that will ensure that organisations move from a low level of desirability to an aspired state, smoothly and effectively - achieving the necessary culture change. This represents the crucial aspect of change management, recognising that the process affects the organisations' vital human resources in a variety of ways. In managing the process, HRODC takes cognisance of the importance of sociotechnical systems in the inevitable culture change that will result from any change management initiative. Sociotechnical systems represent the interaction between technology and human resources. Change agents need to reduce the impact that technology has on the behaviour of the human resources, generally, and specifically to particular individuals or groups - minimising the extent to which role relationships are disrupted. The more role relationships are adjusted the greater the degree of culture change that has to be expected. An understanding of social relationships is important in coming to terms with the negative effect that culture change might have on organisational functioning. Social relationships must be understood because the associated practices might be culturally infused, making culture change undesirable and resistance to change a reality.

The speed and degree of change acceleration, although reaping initial success, can create individual and organisational casualties, in the long term. HRODC is therefore cautious of the pace that it establishes, ensuring that there are individual and organisational preparedness. The need to avoid human and organisational casualties applies to project management as well as to corporate level.

  The above issues relate to change strategies and approaches, the choice of which must relate to the intervention and organisational characteristics. As the  related HR Research Paper (HR Research Article) (Research Article) illustrates, the change strategy and approach to change management that are adopted for project management and corporate management scenario must be carefully thought out. This is necessarily so because of the behavioural issues that are associated with the management of human resources. That is why even though internal and external change agents might have preconceived ideas about how to proceed with a particular proposal for change, none of these fine prescriptions can be treated as a  panacea. 

Because change involves behaviour, then culture forms an important factor – one that cannot be changed overnight but which can be influenced or affected through normative re-education or appeal to individuals’ guarded rationality.
