The Problems With Some Attempts To Establish High-Performance Teams.
How Human Resource and Organisational Development Consultancy (HRODC) can Contribute To The Effective Functioning of Your High-Performance Teams
What Are High-Performance Teams?
High Performance Teams Are Otherwise Known As: Autonomous Work Teams; Autonomous Work Groups; Learning Groups; Self-Directed Work-Teams; Self-Directed Work-Groups; Self-Managed Teams; Self-Managed Groups. They are so called because of the high level of effectiveness with which they perform their various roles. High Performance Teams are both highly motivated and self-sufficient drawing on their own resources and expertise. Rather than providing direction to High Performance Teams, managers act as consultants or resources to be utilised, as and when needed. Their autonomy that they have over their work activities enhances their ability to influence managements decisions on a variety of operational and strategic issues.
The Potential for the Enhanced Contribution of High-performance Teams to Organisational Development Is Great. This Is Because High-Performance Teams usually achieve a high level of motivation. Motivation, in this regard is translated into zeal, drive or enthusiasm. High-Performance Teams are impelled, intrinsically, to improve their performance. This high-level motivation is achieved mainly because members of High-Performance Teams Feel: individually powerful; in control; highly responsible; eventually accountable; genuinely committed; highly dependable; highly empowered with the requisite degree of professional autonomy; explicitly Trusted; highly Respected.
Because High Performance Teams are self-directed, their innovative instincts are brought to the fore. Because they are not afraid of failing, they are likely to take risks. However, because of their professional autonomy, they do not fall victims to risky-shift. Because they have an eye on quality in processes, procedures and operation, they improve added-value of the product or service. They also contribute to the perfection of a learning organisation.
Instituting High-Performance Teams Means That:
Workers are given a high level of autonomy. Partial autonomy tends to lead to disaster organisational casualty;
In operational terms they need to get their assignment at the loading level - Having surpassed sequencing and detailed scheduling these are stages in operational control;
They have a support mechanism;
They affect managements decisions;
As internal customers their demands are met within resource constraints;
They receive the appropriate intrinsic and extrinsic incentives, to enhance and sustain their motivation.
Empowering High-Performance Teams
Teams Cannot Perform Effectively Unless They:
Understand Team Dynamics;
Understand Their Role;
They Know the Finer-points of Team-decision-making;
Their Inter-personal Skills Are Well Developed;
They Are Endowed With Problem-solving Capability;
Understanding Role Relationships;
Are Conversant With the Fundamentals of Communication Incorporating Effective Oral-visual Presentations;
They Have a High Competence Level for the Performance of Their Role;
They Acquire Expertise in Managing Meetings;
They Are Able to Find a Mutual Resolution to Conflict.
The Problems With Some Attempts To Establish High-Performance Teams.
Many organisations institute autonomous work teams or high-performance teams, not because they are desirous of promoting worker autonomy but because they are necessitated by the development of new systems and processes. While autonomous work teams are desirable, their ineffective establishment and management can be more deleterious to organisational effectiveness than the benefit that the organisation derives. However, while organisations such as Steel Case have enjoyed continued productivity improvements and long-term organisational effectiveness, others like Belling suffered to the extent of its demise, with the introduction of autonomous work teams. Inequitable reward systems and ineffectual grouping of workers are only two of the factors that can contribute to their effectiveness.
How Human Resource and Organisational Development Consultancy (HRODC) has the expertise to guarantee the effective development and management of these teams. It succeeds where many consultants have failed in creating the enthusiasm among workers that is an essential prerequisite for success.
HRODC Can:
Prepare the Team for This Extremely Important Role,
Monitor Their Performance for a Specified Period
Before Withdrawing, With the Confidence That They Are Ready to Develop Others -
Thereby Accomplishing a Major Organisational Development Objective.
Help Management to Relax the Reigns, Without Losing Control
Thereby Giving the Teams the Autonomy That They Need
To Perform and Be Prepared to Be Influenced by Them.
Ensure that the Control Mechanism used in High-Performance Teams is based on Output, Rather Than Process or Procedure;
Help to institute an equitable remuneration system that is acceptable to all members.
This change in the Control Mechanism Represents a Careful Selection of Administrative Strategy Towards a Shift in Leadership Style.
